Key Takeaways
- Wudu is the washing that prepares a Muslim for Salah and for touching the Mushaf.
- Four acts are obligatory, from the Quran (5:6): washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head and washing the feet to the ankles.
- The Sunnah way adds the intention, Bismillah, washing the hands, rinsing the mouth and nose, wiping the ears and washing parts three times.
- Go in order, start with the right side, and do not let one part dry before washing the next.
- Using the toilet, passing wind and deep sleep break wudu.
Wudu, the ritual washing before prayer, is one of the first things every Muslim learns, whether as a child, an adult beginner or a new Muslim. It takes only a few minutes, and once you know the order it quickly becomes second nature. This guide walks through each step, explains which parts are obligatory and which are Sunnah, and ends with the beautiful dua to say afterwards.
What Is Wudu?
Wudu is the washing of specific parts of the body that a Muslim performs before Salah, as Allah commands in the Quran. Without wudu, the prayer is not valid. Allah says:
"O you who have believed, when you rise to pray, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles."Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:6
The Obligatory Parts of Wudu
This verse names four acts that every school of thought agrees are obligatory:
- Washing the whole face
- Washing both arms up to and including the elbows
- Wiping over the head with wet hands
- Washing both feet up to and including the ankles
The Prophet ๏ทบ always performed them in this order and without long gaps between them. The steps below follow his complete way of making wudu.
How to Perform Wudu Step by Step
This is the Sunnah way, as the companion 'Uthman ibn 'Affan showed when he described the Prophet's wudu (Sahih al-Bukhari 159; Sahih Muslim 226).
1. Make the intention and say Bismillah
Intend in your heart that you are making wudu for prayer, then say ุจูุณูู ู ุงูููููู (Bismillah, "In the name of Allah").
2. Wash both hands three times
Wash your hands up to the wrists, letting water run between the fingers.
3. Rinse the mouth three times
Take water into your mouth with the right hand, swirl it around and spit it out.
4. Rinse the nose three times
Sniff a little water into the nose with the right hand and blow it out with the left.
5. Wash the face three times
Wash from the hairline to below the chin, and from one ear to the other. Men with beards run wet fingers through them.
6. Wash the arms three times, right first
Wash the right arm from the fingertips up to and including the elbow, then the left arm. Make sure no part of the elbow stays dry.
7. Wipe over the head once
With wet hands, wipe from the front of the head to the back, then bring your hands back to the front.
8. Wipe the ears
Wipe the inside of the ears with your index fingers and the back of the ears with your thumbs.
9. Wash the feet three times, right first
Wash the right foot up to and including the ankle, cleaning between the toes, then the left foot.
The Dua After Wudu
When you finish, it is Sunnah to say:
ุฃูุดูููุฏู ุฃููู ููุง ุฅููููู ุฅููููุง ุงูููููู ููุญูุฏููู ููุง ุดูุฑูููู ููููุ ููุฃูุดูููุฏู ุฃูููู ู ูุญูู ููุฏูุง ุนูุจูุฏููู ููุฑูุณูููููู
Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.
Meaning: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.
Sahih Muslim 234
The Prophet ๏ทบ said that whoever performs wudu well and then says this, the eight gates of Paradise are opened for them, to enter by whichever they wish.
What Breaks Wudu?
Once you have wudu, it stays valid until something breaks it. The scholars agree that these break it:
- Going to the toilet: passing urine or stool
- Passing wind
- Deep sleep, especially lying down
- Losing consciousness
The schools of thought differ on a few other things, such as bleeding or touching the private parts. Follow what your teacher or local imam teaches according to your school.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving the elbows or heels dry: these are the parts most often missed.
- Forgetting between the fingers and toes: let the water run between them.
- Wasting water: the Prophet ๏ทบ used a very small amount. Turn the tap down or off between steps.
- Rushing the order: washing the feet before the arms, for example, breaks the sequence.
- Waterproof layers: nail polish and similar coatings stop water reaching the skin and nails.
Final Thoughts
Wudu is more than a routine: it is a moment to pause, refresh and prepare your heart to stand before Allah. Learn the nine steps, practise them slowly a few times, and say the dua afterwards. If you are learning Salah too, our online Dua & Namaz course teaches wudu and prayer step by step with a patient teacher, and our guide on how to pray Salah takes you through the prayer itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. The intention is in the heart: you simply mean to perform wudu for prayer. Saying "Bismillah" at the start is part of the Sunnah.
Going to the toilet (urine or stool), passing wind and deep sleep break wudu, as does losing consciousness. Scholars differ on a few other things, so ask your teacher or local imam about your own school of thought.
Once is enough for the obligatory parts, as long as the whole area is washed. The Prophet ๏ทบ usually washed each part three times, which is the recommended Sunnah.
Nail polish that forms a waterproof layer stops water reaching the nails, so most scholars say it must be removed before wudu. Henna, which only colours the skin, does not block water.
Wudu stays valid until something breaks it. You can pray several prayers with one wudu if it has not been broken.
